Rant 1: 123-reg mail servers

Hi Guys - do any of you use 123-reg for your domains & hosting?  I'm
guessing a few of you do, so I'm just wondering whether anyone's got their
e-mail to actually work properly yet?

Now that they've upgraded their systems to offer full mailboxes and SMTP
server access, I tried to get my Exim mail server to talk to them
(smarthost), but with no success. I've configured SMTP-auth in the usual
way, but outbound mail gets rejected every time with a 550 error.

I've had problems with other SMTP servers too, and the only one that's ever
worked is GMail (smtp.gmail.com).  So I'm *still* having to use that, and
I'd prefer not to route everything through GMail and Google's data-spying
servers :-)

Any ideas on what I'm missing?
