Or possibly a suspend-to-disk partition.  Or it may be a Linux swap
partition that somehow got corrupted.  I can't see a swap and I'd
be surprised if Fedora doesn't create one by default.

I'd strongly suggest leaving emacs alone until the system is working
to your satisfaction and you've got the time...

"nano" should be installed by default, and is a very quick and simple
editor with a help screen for the most important magic runes always
visible.  "joe" is another excellent alternative.
