I haven't experienced major disk performence issues, I think it's down to how you partition and whether you use disk intesive processes such as software RAID, etc.
Yes I mean with regards GUI Tools for setting up the VM's etc or if you are wanting a desktop (Say to test a new release of a distro prior to roll out) then I tend to use Sun's virtualbox.
