Ubuntu video driver issue

Got me a new wide-screen 1680x1050 display hooked up to my
dismal old laptop. To get it to run at full res I had to install a
new driver thus:

  sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel

Unfortunately when I try to run the laptop on its own, the
display is blank (when running X; boot screen, consoles etc
are all fine). I was able to get the laptop on the net and run:

  sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-i810

from a console to restore the status quo, and now it's back
home again I've reverted to the "intel" driver to enjoy wide-screen
grooviness.

Is there a way to have both drivers available, and wire the choice
into GRUB, so that when it boots I can choose stand-alone config,
or external display config?
