Installing Ubuntu onto USB pen drive

In my experience it won't impact flash lifetime at all assuming the pen 
has wear levelling which you would expect.  Anyway in ten years time 
that drive will be amusing children with the stone age technology the 
old people used to use same as 1998 8MB flash card today.
